Educators

Educators provide care and learning opportunities for the children in a family atmosphere in their own home and receive ongoing support from qualified and registered Early Childhood Teachers.

Some of the criteria to become an Educator is:

  • 20 years old or older
  • Enjoy working with children.
  • Children need to have access to outside where there is a fenced area for them to play in
  • Working smoke alarms
  • Willing to enrol and complete a Level 4 Certifiate of Early Childhood Practice unless you have a higher qualification.
  • First Aid certificate that is current or you are enrolled to complete this

If you wish to earn extra income working from home and being home for your children, this is an ideal situation for Educators. There are huge tax advantages for Educators working from home where Educators do not need to pay P.A.Y.E but those who are on the DPB can earn over $350 per week with no or little effect to their benefit.

Our Educators...

  • Are carefully selected
  • Are Police Checked before they start educating children/tamariki
  • Will to do training with the OpenPolytechnic (Level 4)
  • Have first aid knowledge or hold a certificate within 3 months of joining
  • Provide a home based environment
  • Have a ratio of 1:4
  • Provide a happy atmosphere
  • Homes are safety checked on a regular basis
  • Provide a stimulating home environment to meet each child’s individual needs
  • Have regular spot checks completed
  • Our educators set their hourly rate

As Parents/whanau you are asked to...

  • Pay your childcare fees each and every week either to BJ's or your educator direct.
  • Provide a change of clothes (dress them for messy play)
  • Provide appropriate footwear
  • Provide lunch & Snacks (no peanuts or lollies)
  • Provide drinks (Educators will supply water)
  • Ensure that children are fit and well for care, if sick please keep them home or they will be sent home.

Please look and see if you qualify for a childcare subsidy. Look at the Costs-Terms page and see for yourself - you may be surprised. It is income based and also depends on how many children you have at home, not on how many children require childcare. Please phone the office if you require WINZ forms or BJ’s will have some application forms for you when you enrol.

If you're not working or not on a course, you may qualify for up to 9 hours per week.

The subsidy available up to 50 hours per week. If your child is 3 or 4 you may be eligible for up to 20 hours ECE, conditions apply.

BJ’s Philosophy

We believe by offering a wide range of learning experiences based on individual strengths, interests and needs in a home based environment, all children/tamariki will be provided with the opportunity to develop to their fullest potential.

By nurturing children’s strengths, interests and needs through responsive adult/child, child/child interactions; children will grow up as competent, confident learners and communicators, healthy in mind, body and spirit. Secure in their sense of belonging and in the knowledge that they make a valued contribution to society.

Each child’s individual cultural needs will be respected, acknowledged and valued in the home based environment and fostered using learning outcomes under Te Whaariki (New Zealand Early Childhood Curriculum). We believe children develop and learn best in safe positive care and an educational home environment, where social skills, values, honesty, co-operation, respect, and self-esteem are enhanced through connecting links to the child’s own wider world and whanau settings.
